Karl VI. war an Schönbrunn desinteressiert, seine Tochter Maria Theresia machte es jedoch zum kaiserlichen Sommersitz, was es bis 1918 geblieben ist. In ihrer Ära wurde das Schloss Schönbrunn entscheidend umgebaut, so dass es sich von Fischers Entwurf heute stark unterscheidet. Der Leiter der Umbaumaßnahmen war Nikolaus von Pacassi, der auch Umbauten an der Hofburg durchführte. Dabei gingen allerdings Fresken von Johann Michael Rottmayr verloren.

Auch der Großteil der Inneneinrichtung stammt aus dieser Zeit, sie gilt als fast einziges Beispiel eines österreichischen Rokoko.

Um 1765 übernimmt Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg, der bereits als Vertreter des Frühklassizismus gilt, die baukünstlerische Leitung. Sein markantestes Werk ist die Gloriette, einen Art Laubengang auf dem Hügel oberhalb des Schlosses, die den Schlossgarten optisch abschließt. Gewidmet ist sie als Heldendenkmal.

El Parkhotel Schönbrunn se construyó en 1907 como casa de huéspedes del Emperador Francisco José I. Hoy ofrece todo el conforta quienes visiten la romántica ciudad de Viena. El hotel está situado en las inmediaciones del Palacio Schönbrunn y el parque que lo rodea. El ambiente imperial de días pasados, junto a las modernas instalaciones y el cordial servicio hacen que el hotel sea único en la ciudad de Viena. El hotel alberga una de las pocas salas de baile clásicas que se conservan en Viena. Un ambiente único en el que se celebran muchos bailes tradicionales. Los espacios públicos y la mayoría de las habitaciones han sido reformadas entre 1999 y 2002.
